I’m not going to lie: I’ve only known about Svalbard for a few years. My first encounter with Svalbard, as matter of fact was thanks to a shower curtain. Later to be reinforced by the His Dark Materials trilogy. Though both of these were more whimsical than scientific, they were enough to spark my curiosity in learning more about the Arctic. If you ask most people about the Arctic they imagine a remote place that’s filled with…
- Santa Claus? I can neither confirm nor deny this.
- Ice? You bet.
- Polar bears? For sure.
- Penguins? Nope, no penguins. Penguins (while a cold-water-loving creature) are restricted to the southern hemisphere.
As an educator I see it as my job to encourage curiosity, creativity, problem solving, compassion, and exploration. And, of course, telling people where important places are on the planet.
